By BRAD MARTIN Chamber President
As the crowd began to flock to River Park on July 4 for fireworks, everything was looking good, or so I thought until Tony McCord flagged me down.
“We’re going to have a problem with parking,” he said.
I asked Jimmy Sisk to come with me for a few minutes . . . and about 90 minutes later, with more impromptu help from Chief Bill Jackson and Lt. Kirk Maddux of the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Keith and Judy Matlock – already volunteering their Matlock Trash Service for the day – we had shoehorned as many in as we could. Mayor Bob Bohn opened up an extra section or folks would have been parking as far away as the Square. (Maybe they did!)
The event was a great one – but the parking episode reminded me again how dependent the Chamber’s success is upon volunteers.
So, Chamber members . . . Hickman Countians . . . Centervillians: Help!
Can you lend a hand at the Grinders Switch Music and Arts Festival on September 11, or during set-up the night before? We’re trying to manage the information booth at the National Banana Pudding Festival on October 2. Can you handle a couple hours? How about joining the effort to put on the big Halloween celebration on the Square on October 31?
We won’t keep you all day – just a little time and effort. One promise I can make: You’ll have fun, you’ll run across some folks you haven’t seen in a while – and you probably will meet some visitors to our community.
During my time as president – now through next June – participation is something that the Chamber will emphasize. Keeping our Facebook page (simply Hickman County Chamber of Commerce) and our website page (www.hickmanco.org) is one way we’ll let you know; newsletters and our even board out side the office are others. Check them out. We’ll try to put out the word for volunteers a couple of months before an activity arrives so you can become part of the team.
On July 2, our 15-member board spent 3.5 hours discussing what we want to do during the next year and there is no doubt that we need you as we try to live up to our motto:
Making Hickman County better.
