It Pays To Be Local PDF Print E-mail

paysLocalThe question of where we shop, and why, has always been a hard one here.    On the one hand, two-thirds of our job-holders head out of Hickman County every day for their employment – and how can you reasonably expect them to ignore all the gas, groceries and goodies that they pass on their way back home every day?

But on the other, we have a hard-working set of merchants and service providers right here in Bon Aqua, Centerville and Lyles who offer their best efforts all the time – and shouldn’t they expect to get a fair shake when time the comes to spend those hard-earned dollars? The Chamber is beginning an effort to try and bridge the gap. We need your help to do it, and our first request is to consider the following:  “It Pays to be Local.” That motto is the focus of our new emphasis. Our job in the coming weeks and months is to flesh it out. One example:   More local spending means more local sales tax dollars are collected, which helps meet needs in the schools and elsewhere in local government, and helps keep a lid on other taxes.  But it also means this: With more local spending, more businesses can say “Yes” to those local groups that depend on local contributions. Things like football teams and fire departments, cancer patient benefits and, these days, flood assistance.  Groups here don’t benefit when you buy milk or insurance, or tune-ups or a haircut, someplace else.  Hold on: Everyone knows that you can’t meet all your shopping needs in Hickman County, so . . .   Well, the Chamber’s message is that you can do more at home than you think you can, and at reasonable prices. We’ll be fleshing that out, too, as we try to illustrate the second part of our new motto:
“Live Here . . . Buy Here . . . Thrive Here!”
